Time for a Summer Slim Down

With the season finale of the Biggest Loser on the prime-time TV lineup for next week, slimming down for summer may be on your mind. Warm, sunny spring weather is sneaking up on you and before you know it, bikini season will be here. Don’t stress out about that bikini bod though, because you can transform your body in no time with just a few super quick and easy steps!

To get your body back on track after a lazy winter, the first thing you need to treat yourself with is sleep. When you are sleep deprived, you tend to crave unhealthy foods for instant energy and you are definitely way too exhausted to exercise. So, help yourself out a little by sleeping just a bit more each night so the next day you can feel refreshed, make wiser food choices, and have the energy to work out.

Another quick way to get your body looking fab is to eat breakfast. Nutritionists aren’t lying to you when they say that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, as breakfast gets your metabolism going and keeps you full throughout the morning and early afternoon. To keep your breakfast exciting and healthy, try to aim for foods rich in protein and fiber, which will help keep you satisfied and feeing fuller longer.

Another way to help your body slim down and trip up is to reduce your portion sizes. Food is packaged and served in such a way that makes it so easy to overeat, and we often don’t pay attention to how many calories we’re actually consuming. An easy way to fix this is to be aware of how much you’re eating, and put down the knife and fork when your stomach is full. Lastly, make sure you are exercising. Even if it’s for ten minutes of your day, working out will maintain your body and overall keep you healthy. And try out other options like the Tummy Tuck Belt or an ab-friendly Stability Ball to get that flat stomach you’ve always hoped for!

Online Television Updates

It seems like Netflix is always in the news for one reason or another—sometimes their stock price goes up significantly, sometimes they’re faced with a massive security breech, and sometimes the company makes a big announcement.

In his fourth quarter letter to stockholders, Netflix CEO Reed Hastings proposed a new development that he believes will be a defining moment in the history of Internet TV. Netflix will be releasing the episodes of a new series, House of Cards, all at once so that customers may watch the entire season without waiting for new episodes every week. Hastings hopes to redefine the way that people watch new Internet TV shows by aligning it with the way that many people currently watch entire seasons of reruns in one sitting. Hastings makes a compelling argument, comparing the episodes in a season of TV to chapters in a book.

“Imagine if books were always released one chapter per week, and were only briefly available to read at 8pm on Thursday. And then someone flipped a switch, suddenly allowing people to enjoy an entire book, all at their own pace. That is the change we are bringing about. That is the future of television. That is Internet TV.”

Hastings notes that the benefits are two-fold; both TV producers and TV watchers benefit from the release of entire seasons via Internet TV. For TV producers, releasing TV shows via Internet television providers like TelevisionFanatic or Netflix levels the playing field, to some extent, and allows writers to focus on a compelling story line over multiple episodes rather than focusing on a dazzling pilot or cliffhanger ending to ensure that viewers return next week. From a creative standpoint, writers would no longer be constricted to 22 or 44 minute long episodes, and could avoid developing their episodes to account for advertisements. The lack of ads would certainly be a huge benefit for TV viewers as well, along with the flexibility of watching however many shows they would like, wherever and whenever they wanted.

Since its release, House of Cards, starring Kevin Spacey and Robin Wright has fared well, paving the way for more original shows to be release through Netflix. Online video consumption is growing astronomically—one-third of Internet bandwidth in the U.S. is used to stream from Netflix at peak times, compared to YouTube which takes 15% of bandwidth, and Amazon Video and Hulu which take 1.75% and 1.38% respectively. Hastings hopes to revolutionize the way people watch TV, and providing the choice to watch entire seasons at once is certainly a step in that direction. It remains to be seen how people respond to the choice, and if other online streaming platforms join the trend.
